Remembering Ma On Shan

August 3, 2019 By Susan Blumberg-Kason 2 Comments

Each day there’s a new headline about the turmoil in Hong Kong this summer, something inevitably hits a nerve with anyone who loves the city. This weekend areas that have been hurt have been Wong Tai Sin and Ma On Shan, among others.

I lived in Ma On Shan for two short years, but they seemed to last a decade at the time. My peaceful, sleepy outpost along the Tolo Harbour is anything but that now. Residents are calling for a vigilante watch to protect themselves. I never thought that would ever be an issue in Ma On Shan, let alone Hong Kong. Here are some photos from my former home.

I lived in Ma On Shan around that time too, between 1988 and 1997, that estate was brand new in the mid-90s.

I was there 96-98! But when I was at CUHK from 90-91, there was very little across the Tolo Harbour, so you were a pioneer. Sunshine City was practically new when I moved in.
