The Eaton Hotel was always a landmark on my walks around Kowloon in my twenties. No one could miss the outdoor elevators that seemed to reach into the sky. Every time I saw the Eaton, I could always tell how much longer it took to reach my destination. It was one of those landmarks.
My mom, uncle, and I stopped at the Eaton for a cold drink in 1996 and learned their cafe served beer in jars. Nine months later, I think my parents stayed there. Here is my dad at the Eaton’s outdoor terrace many floors above the ground level.
On my recent uber-quick layover in Hong Kong, I was determined to stay at the Eaton. I had heard about the cool things they were doing with artist residencies and collective work space, so I wanted to see the hotel for myself.
The hotel at night. If you look closely, you can see the outside elevators. One is lit up in blue and the other red or hot pink.
The terrace where my dad was eating breakfast was the site of an outdoor party that Saturday night my youngest son and I arrived. It was 11:30pm and sounded like it was just getting started. But the rooms were soundproof and the noise didn’t creep into our room just above the terrace.
The inside was obviously newly remodeled and really cool. The customer service at the Eaton was wonderful and just like in the pre-internet days, they were perfectly fine with keeping some mail for me and giving it to me when I checked in.
This was just inside the place where taxis dropped off and picked up guests.
And here’s that outside area.
Now for the room! We had a small room for two, but honestly that’s all you need when you have five hours to sleep before leaving for an early flight. It was great for my 9 year old and me.
Hong Kong spaces are small!

And this was our view! Good morning, Hong Kong! (It never gets old.)
And this!
Time to go to China!
My 9 year old was totally game for our quick layover in Hong Kong. We were on the ground for 12 hours in total and had a blast seeing friends and checking out the Eaton Hotel. I’d definitely go back to the Eaton!
