High Noon in Carefree, Arizona

April 6, 2018 By Susan Blumberg-Kason Leave a Comment

It’s hard to believe we were in warm and sunny Phoenix just a week ago and now we’re shivering in the cold and brushing off the snow from yesterday in Chicago. One of the many highlights of our trip was going out for tea in Carefree, Arizona, one of the first planned communities in the US. The English Rose Tea Room is not only the cutest tea shop I’ve been to in the US, but their afternoon tea is almost 1/3 the price of the fancy hotel teas in big cities across the US and even in Hong Kong.

People have asked me over the years of it’s okay to bring men and boys to afternoon tea. It’s kind of a strange thing to hear, as if there were other cuisines that were gender-specific. But the answer of course is yes. My husband and younger son were with us and they managed just as well as my daughter, mother, and I.

We sat outside under an awning, but take a look at the interior.

This was where we ate, under this stunning chandelier. If my house were nice, I’d try to replicate this.

We ordered afternoon tea, even though it was lunchtime.

My tea: berries and blossoms!

I ordered a plate of tea sandwiches and a cup of potato soup. It was the perfect amount of food without a sugar overload.

But the kids went all out!

The aftermath.

The English Rose Tea Room in Carefree is near the intersection of Ho Hum Road and Easy Street.
