West Village excerpt

So yesterday was high school graduation for number one son. Our weekend will be packed with parties and other events, but I wanted to take a moment here to reflect on something I’d written in Good Chinese Wife way before Jake ever started high school.

It was a scene in the middle of the book when his dad and I were in New York on our first trip to the US since we married. I wrote about Greenwich Village in the winter and how quaint and civilized I thought it to be.

Little did I know that 20 years later, almost to the month, Jake would be attending New York University in this very area!

It’s difficult for all parents to see their kids go off to college, but I feel so lucky that mine will be in a place I love to visit. My dad always said if he struck it rich, he would move to Manhattan. He’s not here to see his first grandson go off to college, but I know he would be very proud and would think we’d all struck it rich when Jake goes off to NYU!
