One of my favorite things about publishing a book has been meeting people–both in person and through social media–who have read it and have something to say about it. Some have even given me gifts at events or through the mail. I wish I’d posted photos of these gifts because they’ve all been so thoughtful and creative.
A friend and reader from Instagram messaged me a while ago to see if she could get my address to send me something in the mail. Of course I said yes. Here’s what arrived a couple days ago!
A few packs of red envelopes, or laisee in Cantonese, and a 2016 calendar. One of the laisee packs is from The Royal Press in Melaka. Let’s take a closer look at the red and gold designs!
The Royal Press also has a limited edition of the calendar Doreen sent. It came in this pretty mailing envelope:
And here it is!
The inside has both the Chinese and Gregorian calendars. But at closer look, it also lists the Year of the Republic, which for Chinese history buffs like moi, is super exciting to see. Ground zero starts at 1911, so this year is 105 (1911+105=2016).
The calendar is fibrous and letter-pressed and so luxurious.
Thank you a million, Doreen, for these lovely treats! I just love them and will keep them safe here in Chicago! And thank you for being such a great fan of Good Chinese Wife!
