Lunch at Fat Rice

October 24, 2015 By Susan Blumberg-Kason 2 Comments

When my oldest son asked when we could go back to Fat Rice, one of our favorite restaurants, I said why not today?

So my husband and I loaded the kids into our car and drove into the city for a big and delicious lunch of Southeast and East Asian delicacies.

We started with vegetable samosas. I don’t eat a ton of fried food, but will always make an exception for these.

Tom and the kids enjoyed these homemade pork dumplings. They practically fought over them.

Next up was this pork bao, split by Tom and Jake.

The vegetable curry nasi lamak was out of this world flavorful. I mixed all of the ingredients except the tea eggs (Jake doesn’t eat them) and passed the plate around the table for all of us to share.

We also chose piri piri chicken, one of Fat Rice’s signature dishes. The Africana sauce has a zing, but it wasn’t too spicy for my two youngest kids.

For our finale, we had to order the Hong Kong French toast. It was served to us already cut into four pieces and by the time I took out my phone, most of it was gone. The toast is sliced and stuffed with peanut butter and bananas before it’s deep fried and served with Fat Rice’s homemade blueberry jam (slightly savory with a trickle of vinegar), fresh coconut slices, lingonberries, sliced apples, and coconut milk.

Our drinks were also noteworthy. The kids all ordered spiced grapefruit soda. I took a sip and it was wonderful.

I chose my favorite tea, genmaicha or roasted rice tea. It’s not often I find a restaurant that serves it so I always order it.

Fat Rice is located at 2957 West Diversey Avenue in Chicago. Their phone number is 773.661.9170.

Hong Kong French Toast sounds delicious! I’ve never had it before.

I bet somewhere in Toronto sells it. If you find any 茶餐聽, they should have it!
