Photo Friday

Malecon

To celebrate the agreement to restore relations between the US and Cuba, I’m posting  a photo from my trip to Havana and Varadero eleven years ago. It was such an amazing trip. Here I’m standing on the famous Malecon or waterfront promenade in Havana.

Earlier that day some girls in Old Havana asked if I wanted my hair braided for US$5. Why not? So they led me to a ledge along a garden in a nearby park and braided my hair. It was such a touristy thing to do, but also allowed me to talk in my almost non-existent Spanish (I’ve never studied it formally) with locals. When you’re on a government-sponsored tour, the chance to meet locals isn’t all that great.

Cuba is such a beautiful country and especially rich in the arts and medicine. Havana is one of the most exciting cities I’ve visited. Have you been to Cuba? What did you think?
