One more photo from the stack I rediscovered last weekend. My mom took this photo of me snapping a shot of the Batu Caves in Malaysia, near Kuala Lumpur.
Although I think we were both looking forward to the Indonesia part of that trip (can you say Bali?), we just loved Malaysia. Besides KL, we also traveled to Penang, Kuching, and Melaka–all so different.
After this trip, my mom flew back to the US while I headed–solo–to Vietnam and Cambodia. They weren’t exactly top destinations for Americans back then. The US didn’t even have relations with Vietnam. And Pol Pot was still hiding in the jungles of Cambodia. But that’s another story for another day.

I knew what this was before reading, though I agree, it’s amazing to see so few people there. I think I visited it twice and both times it was packed. I love seeing your “old” photos of SE Asia, HK, and China.

I love seeing older photos of Malaysia. Never really believe my dad when he says “it was so much quieter back then!” until I see pics like this. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Batu Caves without throngs of people on those steps!

Gosh, I can’t remember ever seeing a ton of crowds in Malaysia! I can’t imagine what it’s like today. Kuching and Georgetown were sleepy, and KL was busy with traffic, but nothing like Jakarta or Bangkok. I wonder what time we got to the Batu Caves, but I don’t think it was super early!
