Happy Year of the Horse!
This photo was taken at the end of the Year of the Horse two decades ago. Time flies!
I spent that Chinese New Year in Jiangsu province, China with friends from Nanjing.
Here we are in the countryside with Mr. Chen’s parents and his family. Chen was my tour guide during my first trip to China in 1988.
It wasn’t so kosher to cart around a foreigner back then. The Chens had to register with me with public security (the police) wherever we traveled. This was only a year and a half after Tiananmen and things weren’t as free as they are today.
Still, they treated me as one of the family and included me in all their Chinese New Year celebrations.
