The other night I was perusing Amazon and decided to check in on Good Chinese Wife to see how it was doing. Lo and behold, there was my cover!
I’ve known about the cover for some time, but it was fun to see it on Amazon. We’re still working on a catchy subtitle, so this isn’t the final version.
It’s really a perfect cover for me. First, the imagery is stunning. As my editor described it, the tower of cups shows that I was trying to keep my marriage together, yet at any minute it could all come toppling down.
Second, I love tea and mention tea a bit in my memoir. And third, I practically grew up with this china pattern. My mom’s friend Mary sent us a complete set (soup bowls, tea pot, soup tureen, tea cups) of this very set way back in 1981 after she returned from a year in Shanghai.
When the final cover comes out, I’ll be sure to post that, too!

I had expected a different cover actually. Looking at this cover makes me imagine there might be some comedy and laughter to the story. Is there?

I do think that this really is one of my favorite covers. I was expecting something different when the Sourcebooks team first show this to us, but it has grown on me so much!
