I came across the photo in my friend Megan’s album from our first trip to China in 1988. It’s definitely Shanghai, and it’s definitely June 1988.
But no one I’ve spoken with from that trip can remember where exactly it was taken. My first guess was the Peace Hotel–assuming the rooftop had a 360 degree view of the city.
If anyone has an idea of where this was shot, I’d love to know.

Haven’t been to Shanghai for quite a while, but I do remember that there’s a rooftop terrace at Captain’s Hostel, not sure if that hostel was already there in 1988 (I doubt it) and not sure that’s where this picture was taken. Just a guess!
