It seems like the news out of Japan keeps getting worse. As if the most devastating earthquake and a giant tsunami weren’t enough, now Japan has nuclear issues.
Sadly, these things aren’t new to Japan. Always the optimist, I believe the country will recover and regain its former glory.
If one looks at recent history, it was quite remarkable when Tokyo hosted the Olympics less than 20 years after the end of WWII.
In 1964, my mom received last minute Olympics tickets. She traveled from her home in Nagoya to Tokyo. But as she would soon find out, securing tickets was the easy part.
Tokyo still wasn’t equipped for mass tourism in 1964, so the hotels couldn’t accommodate all the attendees. Luckily she finally found a place to stay, but it wasn’t easy.
Still, I’m amazed how Japan rebounded after the war so much that they qualified to host a major international event just two decades later.
Technology and science have improved greatly since then, so I’m confident Japan will recover quickly from these terrible tragedies.
