The reincarnation of the Miramar Hotel

May 7, 2010 By Susan Blumberg-Kason Leave a Comment

Miramar Hotel, Hong Kong

I haven’t stayed in many hotels in Hong Kong. But 15 years ago, for a special occasion, I ended up at the Miramar on Nathan Road and thought to myself, “This hotel reached its heyday years ago.” Like back when my mom and her family traveled to Hong Kong in the 1960s.

So yesterday when I received an e-mail blast from the folks at Dim Sum and Then Some, I was intrigued to learn about the new MiraSpa, which will celebrate its grand opening tomorrow.

It’s housed in the Mira Hotel, the sleek new replacement of the old Miramar.

I’ve found pictures of the Miramar on Gwulo.com that go as far back as 1955. But at some point, the hotel changed corners, moving from the north side of Kimberley Road to the south side.

The Miramar might be gone and a new, contemporary sibling in its place. But I’ll always remember this gem that I stumbled upon when I still lived in Hong Kong.
