I love independent bookstores and was super excited to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day today at Sandmeyer’s in Chicago, site of my book launch last summer!
When we arrived, I told the kids they could each pick out a book. They were so excited and spent quite a while perusing the shelves. With help from Mrs. Sandmeyer, the kids found books.
Just as we were about to pay, Mrs. Sandmeyer announced the next raffle (held every half hour). So I quickly entered before that drawing closed.
And several minutes later found out I’d won! Tom is a huge Grateful Dead fan, so how a propos that we won this audio book.
Before we left, I popped over to the memoir and biography section just to check! And voila, there were two copies of Good Chinese Wife!
Do you have a favorite independent bookstore?

The Battery Books & Music is my favorite! It’s in South Pasadena, CA and shares a foyer with a fantastic gourmet grilled cheese restaurant (so I always pair the two in one trip.) 🙂 I love how cozy it is, the sweet dog and listening to folks chat with the owner. For a couple of years now, I’ve been signed up to receive a Google alert whenever there’s a new article regarding “the future of independent bookstores”. So, I received one about Independent Bookstore Day and I wondered if you were going to write about it—Lo and Behold! I love that you took your kids to an independent bookstore to celebrate it and that you told them they could pick out some books to take home. You’re an awesome mom! I miss you. 🙁

I like how Independent Bookstore Day aligns with Free Comic Book Day! 🙂

We used to live just a few blocks from Sandmeyer’s. Great book store and great couple! So fun!
