Last week I learned I have a new publication date. Instead of July 1st, it has been changed to July 29th so the Publicity Department at Sourcebooks can fully maximize their magic. I love it and that’s why I was so excited to sign with Sourcebooks!
In the meantime, GOOD CHINESE WIFE is available now for pre-ordering on Kindle and Nook, which is exciting news, too.
But the biggest surprise this week was receiving some old photos from my friend Annie. I hadn’t seen these photos in years!
In this one, we’re walking around Happy Valley after spending a magical day eating at Dim Sum and strolling through the Jewish cemetery. Annie is the one who first told me about the cemetery.
I was about four months pregnant and was obviously not in tune with the latest maternity fashions. (For the record, it was difficult to find cute maternity clothes back then, especially in Hong Kong. Go figure.)
A month later, Annie organized a little farewell work dinner at the lovely China Tee Club (which closed a few years ago), yet another place she introduced me to. Here we’re posing with our friend Czes, who taught at the university where we edited course materials. We’ve all now dispersed around the world (the US, Australia, and the UK).
In my several moves since then, I lost many of my Hong Kong photos. My parents saved a bunch, and thanks to Annie now I have these. My brother also lost his China and Hong Kong photos in one of his moves.
People warn about posting photos online because they’ll always be there. After losing mine, that doesn’t sound like such a bad idea to me!

enjoyed reading this lovely walk through your obviously emotive time in honkers. i never got to see the china tee club in person but i know it was decorated with much care with genuine antiques. jocelyn chu who was one of the owners (her younger sister a former miss hk) and i were partners in crime at the alliance francaise on waterloo road – they lived opposite and we often walked home from school together. smiles and hugs

Wow, that’s very cool that you were so close to Joceyln Chu! I loved the old world feel of the China Tee Club. Very colonial and very nice. It was members only back then and my friend was in the know. Otherwise, I would never have been able to get in. I love hearing about your time in HK back then and now!!!
