Kicking off the Year of the Horse

January 20, 2014 By Susan Blumberg-Kason 4 Comments

Year of the Horse stampChinese New Year will be here in a week and a half, but it’s not too early to start celebrating!

I’m going to talk to three groups of kids about the Year of the Horse, starting this Saturday with my Girl Scout Daisies troop. The girls will get some fun, girly souvenirs at the end of the meeting.

Also on Saturday I’m going to meet some friends for a pre-New Year’s dim sum breakfast. And the following weekend my family will go out to dinner to celebrate (we’re hoping to hit the only Macanese restaurant in Chicago; more to follow).

This winter has been colder and snowier than the past 10-15 winters I’ve experienced in Chicago. (I’ve completely blocked out the Chicago winters of my youth when it was even colder).

So in my lazy mode, I ordered these new Chinese New Year stamps through www.usps.com. They don’t scream Year of the Horse, but if you look in the upper left corner, there’s a small drawing of a horse. I ordered enough to last, oh, until my book comes out in almost five months!

Are you doing anything to celebrate the Lunar New Year? If so, what are your plans?

Cute stamps 🙂 Twelve years ago when I was in late teens I remember traveling to Russia in December where my cousin gave me a Horse statue of a professor horse reading a book haha. How appropriate I think. I hope for this year to get some kimbap (Korean type sushi which I love and my parents don’t,) as well as Korean BBQed beeff bulgogi and a vermicelli dish and eat it. Happy Year of the Horse, and if I might add, really looking forward to your book!
