My ex-husband is in town to visit our son this weekend. He brought us these bags of snacks from Shanghai.
The Chinese characters on three of the bags translate to “I’m happy. I’m healthy”.
The bag on the bottom left has candied walnuts. The bags on the bottom right and upper left contain smaller bags of seeds and nuts, some candied and others salted. (These three bags were the happy and healthy ones.)
And the bag on the upper right has individually wrapped Chinese sweets–made from nuts, dried fruit, and seeds.
I think my daughter ate a dozen of the candies yesterday before dinner. Hao chi. Good eats.
Hi, Susan! I love the snacks! I don’t recall seeing these particular ones, but this did remind me of the one snack I ate all the time: black birdseed. I honestly do not remember the Chinese name for this snack, but I do remember that it was a hard cake made out of seeds and nuts that had been blackened from charring/toasting. I ate that stuff like it was an addiction! ‘Hope Jake enjoys his visit!
Thanks so much, Ali, for your comment! I’ve had a blackened sesame seed ‘cake’ that was slightly sweet. I wonder if that’s related to the one you’re talking about?
Hee, Susan, this didn’t seem to “take” when I orig posted it – hence, the double posting on here and on your FB page. Oh, well. I imagine the black sesame cake you had was the same as what I had. It seemed to be a very popular snack all over China. BTW, did you ever have any of the white peaches while you were in China? I don’t think they’re in season for very long (August/September?), but my, oh my, were they delicious!
To prevent spam, I have to approve all comments. So you won’t see them appear right away. I trashed the repeated comment since it was the same, so it’s not that I didn’t get it. Sorry for the confusion!! I don’t think I had white peaches in China. In July one year I took a bag of two dozen regular peaches on the Trans-Siberian and spread them out over 7 days. By the time I got to Moscow, the last two or three were beyond ripe. I think it would have been too early for the white peaches in Beijing. They sound delicious! Thanks for all your great comments! I love them!!!
